Sticky Rice: Editor Instruction Manual

Carissa Sutter, 126I am writing this article as a private instructional guide for editors only. It is not meant for the public. The purpose of this article is both to provide a structure of the technical parts of the editing process and to provide a general guide for continuity on the blog when it comes to Categories and Tags and Menus. Events Editor/Wordpress Calendar WidgetThe Wordpress Calendar Widget is linked to our stickyrice.newsletter@gmail.com google calendar. When the Events Editor adds events to that calendar, it will soon appear on our website. It is set up to only show the next five events but that can be changed.Tentative/general instructions for the Events Editor:1) Include a map that marks where the monthly events will take place2) Make a separate post for each month3) Include pictures4) Do not include any political events that may reflect negatively on Thailand. We currently have authorization to post events immediately, and we could lose that right if we post something questionable. There also have been cases of Volunteers being Administratively Separated due to posting political statements against their host countries on their blogs, so keep that in mind.Google DriveNow that we have a blog, it does not really make sense to store articles on the drive anymore. We may want to use it to store other things, someday, but I'm not sure what. By-LawsPlease read the By-Laws if you want more detailed information of each staff position. Editing ProcessGmail1. Every new quarter, create a new folder (example: March 2015) under the Submissions parent-folder. I have started to create a folder for the current quarter and create a folder for the next quarter in case we need to hold a submission.2. When a new email with an attached submission comes into the inbox, it can be placed into the Submissions/March 2015 (whatever the current quarter) folder.3. Editor-in-Chief can then assign the article to one of the editors, and send the article to them.4. When the quarter's articles have been reviewed and published, that quarter folder is moved out of Submissions and into the Archives folder. Wordpress  1. You can paste the contents of the edited article into a new post on Wordpress. On the very top, left-hand side, add the author's name, italicized, then a comma and the number of their group. (example: Carissa Sutter, 126 )2. Make sure to change the "Status" to "Pending Review" and click "Save as Pending" as you edit.

We cannot publish feature articles until they have been reviewed by the Country Director.

3. If there is an image you want to include, there are two ways to do it. Either A) Click "Add Media" and then upload the image into our Wordpress gallery, or B) Copy and paste it from the internet. Edit it within the post (click the little pencil icon when you hover your mouse over the image) to give credit to the photographer or add a link.4. Categories: Categories on Wordpress are meant to be a general keyword. On our blog, each link on the header menu and side menu has been tied to a single category. Usually, you should only choose one Category for the post so that it does not end up being the top story under more than one menu item. Use your best judgement.5. Tags: Tags are more specific words that might be used in a search. Always include the author's name, their group number, and the year that this was submitted. If it is an announcement that you are making, as an editor, include your name in the tag. You can then add any other tag word that you believe is relevant to the article. Example, for a recipe you might add dessert, cake, hungry, cook, easy, food, healthy.6. MORE: The "read more" button is on the editing menu of each post, when you are in editing mode. It looks like an icon of a road. You have to insert this "read more" button somewhere after the first paragraph of the article, in order to choose where the preview stops on the main page.More7. When ready, the Editor-in-Chief can notify the Country Director and he will review the posts in the "Pending Review" box. Once he has approved the articles,  go to "Pending Review," select all of the boxes.Bulk Actions --> Edit --> ApplyBulk EditStatus --> Published -->UpdateBulk Publish
